#2. The battle against Yahoo! and importance of web analysis.

You know the importance of web analysis is reported in a lot of sites. Web analysis can let us know when access to our site, who accesses, and how reaches our site. I would like to comment my experience I could get privilege from the web analysis.

I tried to suggest some commercial site managed by me to Yahoo! and submit 'Yahoo! Express' which guaranteed and expedited consideration of a site. I paid for 'Yahoo! Express' and waited for the response. Qualification for the entry was fully covered. But the judgment was not good and my site was declined by the Yahoo!. The Yahoo! told me the reason, which they could not log in the site. I completely disagreed the comment because many customers have logged in the site everyday and I find no problem in our site. So I decided to look into the access log of the site and I confirmed the Yahoo! logged in the site successfully.

Then I wrote down the traffic of the Yahoo! editor and sent the report to the Yahoo!. In a few days I found the other traffic of the Yahoo! and could finally get the acceptance for Yahoo! registration. If we haven't had a web analysis tool, we should had wasted the Yahoo! express fee (US$299.00).

Thus it is very important for us to establish a web analysis tool. I would like to show you the various kinds of web analysis tool types. You will be able to choose one according to your environment.

• ASP type

  ASP stands for Application Service Provider.Almost all kinds of servers allow this type even if you are not permitted to use CGI or PHP etc and the setting is very comfortable. Also you don't need to concern about the limit of your page capacity since log is stored in their site. Some are provided with free but advertisements and some are provided the function to remove the advertisements with a charge.

• Self install type

  You need to purchase or down load script written by CGI or PHP etc and established them. Please make sure your server is acceptable for CGI or PHP. This type is suitable for commercial site as no advertisement is posted. Analysis of spider access is acceptable.

  Of course we can create our script by ourselves. I have created my script so that I can find users activities like time of user log-in, search words in my site. The fact is I found the trace of the Yahoo! editor activity by using that.

• Web(HTTP) server log analysis type

  HTTP server itself analyzes the log. It is the best analysis method, but you need to have an authority for your HTTP server access. Analysis of spider access is acceptable as same as the self install type. The Weblizer is one of the famous web(HTTP) server log analysis without a fee.

  • Webalizer

    It provides graphic analysis against the Apaches log. You can find the unique user count,the number of page views, access log per day / time etc of your site in a table or a graph.

Here is actual log. How complicate it shows! That's why tools or scripts are provided us so that we can trace log easily.
