#3. Search engine SPAM and backward link.

Do you know 'search engine SPAM'? Some people point out in BBS and their site it should be SPAM that we use same color letters with same background color. To be more specific, if there is a site put the word ('Britney Spears') in white color with same white background color, you may find the irrelevant site to 'Britney Spears' because of invisible letters. That is called an example of 'Search engine SPAM' and it used to be applied many porno sites in the old days. Many people think all SPAM actions are ugly and should be expelled from search engines. Is it true?

In my view, SEO itself is a kind of 'search engine SPAM'. For example, you change <title> tag so that your site can be ranked at the top of the search results. Or you take the rate of keyword appearance into consideration when you design your page. In sight of search engine, they are SPAM or "dirty" tactics as same as hidden letters in background color. We can't deny SPAM or any "dirty" tactics as far as we want to increase visitors by using search engines because all kinds of SEO techniques are tricks from point of search engine's view.

Now we had better put hidden colors in our site for SEO? Is it effective for SEO? The answer is No for Google.

Imagine there are two person named 'Britney Spears' with the same family and personal name and they are a famous singer and an ordinary woman. If the both women open website, probably the one for a famous singer should be ranked at the top of search results. Search engines never think the Britney Spears official website of SPAM site. The reason is the Google checks the keyword of the back link.(check the number of back link.)

Based on the Britney Spears official website, there is no <h1> and only a few words,'Britney Spears'. However that is ranked at the top of the search results.(as of August 8, 2004)

The bottom line is that we need to increase backward link. The more proper keyword is linked, the better results are expected. However it is difficult to do that.
